My research interests involve understanding how and why animals acquire and process acoustic information. I primarily study these questions using insects (and sometimes lower vertebrate animals) that communicate acoustically or that rely on acoustic signals for locating their prey or hosts. Research in my lab uses a variety of techniques that include psychophysical experiments, field playback experiments, neural recordings, and biophysical measurements of the auditory periphery.
Current Lab Members
Jimena Dominguez, B.A. - Post-Baccalaureate Research Technician/Lab Manager
Jimena Dominguez graduated from Carleton College in 2022 with a major in Biology. Jimena is broadly interested in the sensory mechanisms involved in auditory perception and how that influences animal behavior. She hopes to pursue graduate studies in this field after her Post-Bac experience. Outside of the lab, Jimena enjoys traveling, playing soccer, and going to concerts
Laura Mongui
Laura is an international student from Colombia going into her senior year. She is majoring in Biology and Studio Art. She is always finding ways to combine her passions for science and illustrations. She is very interested in animal communications and how they are getting affected by human pollution. She wants to pursue graduate school with an emphasis in conservation biology. Outside the lab she enjoys painting, pottery, running in nature, and exploring different cultures through their art and cuisines.
Jackson Gilbert
Jackson Gilbert is junior at St. Olaf, purusing majors in biology and religion. Jackson is interested in zoology, more specifically entomology and insect behavior. He is also interested in the biophysics of the sensory processing communication signals. Outside of the lab, Jackson enjoys playing water polo, reading, and watching movies.
Quang Vu
Quang Vu, a junior at St. Olaf College, is majoring in Mathematics with a concentration in Neuroscience. Quang is exploring how these fields intersect. Focused on perception, psychology, and behavior, he aspires to pursue a career in computational neuroscience. In his free time, Quang enjoys reading books and honing his cooking skills.
Blanca Torres
Blanca Torres is a junior undergraduate student at St. Olaf College majoring in Biology and Chemistry with a concentration in Biomolecular Science. Blanca is interested in understanding the nervous system and behavioral responses in insects and humans and is strongly interested in neurodegenerative and autoimmune diseases. She hopes to pursue a dual degree in medicine and/or graduate studies in immunology. Outside the lab, she enjoys spending time with loved ones, volunteering, exploring nature, and reading.
Rahaf Qarabsa
Rahaf Qarabsa is an international student from Palestine in her sophomore year at St. Olaf College. Rahaf is broadly interested in Biology and Neuroscience, she is curious to learn more about animal communication and the sensory mechanisms involved. She was amazed by the work conducted in the lab starting from the varied experimental set-ups, lab maintenance, and infesting, to conducting behavioral and neurophysiological experiments. Outside the lab, Rahaf enjoys Taekwondo, traveling, and meeting new people.
